English Language Arts
English Language Arts Standard 1: Language for Information and Understanding
Students will listen, speak, read, and write for information and understanding.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
A fifty-page SAFE handbook containing assignments in reading and writing is an integral part of the SAFE through the Arts program.
ELA Standard 2: Language for Literary Response and Expression
Student will read and listen to oral, written, and electronically produced texts and relate them to their own lives.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
Students participating in the SAFE through the Arts program present and listen to oral and/or written presentations relating to the curriculum and three key components during the last day of the program.
English Language Arts Standard 3: Language for Critical Analysis and Evaluation
As speakers and writers, students will use oral and written language that follows the accepted conventions of the English language to present, from a variety of perspectives, their opinions and judgments on experiences, ideas, information and issues.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
As part of their final creative project during the SAFE through the Arts program, students are encouraged to use their cognitive thought processes in order to orally present their interpretation of a concept that they learned from the program.
English Language Arts Standard 4: Language for Social Interaction
Students will listen, speak, read, and write for social interaction. Students will use oral and written language that follows the accepted conventions of the English language for effective social communication with a wide variety of people. As
readers and listeners, they will use the social communications of others to enrich their understanding of people and their views.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
During the SAFE through the Arts program, students learn the basic principals of Marshall Rosenberg’s Non Violent Communication model in order to verbally communicate more effectively with others. Students also practice journal writing and vocabulary building in order to communicate their feelings.
Health& Physical Education
Health& Physical Education Standard 1: Personal Health & Fitness
Students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness, participate in physical
activity, and maintain personal health.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
Learning how to take care of oneself physically through exercise and nutrition is an integral part of the Self Affirmation key component of the SAFE through the Arts program. A section of the SAFE handbook is devoted to physical and emotional health. In addition, students learn tools to center themselves through the use of meditation, and for maintaining ones physical well-being through engaging in physical activity.
Health& Physical Education Standard 2: A Safe & Healthy Environment
Students will acquire the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
Students participating in the SAFE through the Arts program learn how to recognize signs of a potentially abusive relationship as well as tools to help create their physical and emotional safety.
Health& Physical Education Standard 3:Resource Management
Students will understand and be able to manage their personal and community resources.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
The SAFE through the Arts handbook contains information on community resources that are available to students, including confidential hotline numbers and support groups. In addition, students are encouraged to tap into their own resources by creating tools for anger management, building self-esteem, and coping with grief and other emotions.
The Arts
The Arts Standard 1: Creating, Performing, and Participating in the Arts
Students will actively engage in the processes that constitute creation and performance in the arts (dance, music, theatre,
and visual arts) and participate in various roles in the arts.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
Students actively participate in dramatic role- play, drumming, collage making, dance and music as part of the curriculum of the SAFE through the Arts program.
The Arts Standard 2: Knowing and Using Arts Materials and Resources
Students will be knowledgeable about and make use of the materials and resources available for participation in the arts
in various roles.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
Through the SAFE through the Arts program, students are made aware of, taught, and encouraged to utilize a variety of art modalities in their lives.
Technology
Technology Standard 7: Interdisciplinary Problem Solving
Students will apply the knowledge and thinking skills of mathematics, science, and technology to address real-life problems and make informed decisions.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
SAFE through the Arts program encourages students to utilize cognitive and analytical thinking by applying information that they learn from the program into enacting real life situations through dramatic role-play. In addition, the exercises found in the SAFE through the Arts handbook help facilitate positive, well-informed choices about their own lives.
Social Studies
Social Studies Standard 3: Geography
Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the geography of the interdependent
world in which we live.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
Through studying the SAFE through the Arts Handbook’s map of the United States outlining the statistics of reported domestic violence cases, students will gain an understanding of the problem of domestic violence in our country in relationship to what areas of the country are generally most affected by the problem.
Career Development & Opportunities
Career Development & Occupational Standard 1: Career Development
Students will be knowledgeable about the world of work, explore career options, and relate personal skills, aptitudes, and abilities to future career decisions.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:
The Financial independence key component of the SAFE through the Arts program engages students in role-playing activities that focus building important life skills, including choosing a college, selecting a career, and learning the importance of opening up a bank account. Students are given pertinent information on how to balance a checkbook, what types of accounts banks offer, how to apply for a job (including samples of resumes, cover letters and thank you letters) as well as a list of all accredited Universities, colleges, and trade schools in the state of New York.
Career Development & Occupational Standard 2: Integrated Learning
Students will demonstrate how academic knowledge and skills are applied in the workplace and other settings.
How the SAFE through the Arts program utilizes this standard:å
The curriculum of the SAFE through the Arts program helps to foster integrated learning between the arts and academic learning. In addition, students are encouraged to make the connection between their talents, skills, and possibilities for a future career.
